    Het einde van de wereld begint met de Stille Apocalyps. The Long Dark is een first-person overlevings- en verkenningsspel zonder zombies of killer robots. In plaats daarvan ben jij het tegen de strenge Canadese winter, worstelend om alleen te overleven in een koude en vijandige omgeving.

    The Long Dark houdt een traag, meditatief tempo aan, maar het gevaar is heel echt. Elke dag moet je je voorraad voedsel en water op peil houden, voldoende rust nemen, en warm blijven. Je moet de omgeving verkennen om te scharrelen, te verzamelen en te jagen naar wat je nodig hebt. Door dit alles heen moet je woeste wolven, beren en andere wezens afweren die op je kunnen jagen. Het spel heeft een verhaalmodus waarin je afwisselend speelt tussen piloot Will McKenzie en zijn vervreemde vrouw, Dr. Astrid Greenwood. Wanneer een mysterieuze geomagnetische storm Will's vliegtuig neerhaalt, moeten de twee de dorre wildernis van Bear Island, Canada, verkennen en elkaar terugvinden.

    In de Survival Mode probeer je zo lang mogelijk in de wildernis te leven en de dood door honger, dorst, aanvallen van dieren, ziekte en de bittere, bittere kou te vermijden. Verken 11 verschillende regio's, variërend van een vervallen stad, een boerencommune, een hydro-elektrische dam, een rustig rivierdal, of een kale bergtop. Beheer kritieke hulpbronnen zoals schoon water en brandhout. Scharrel naar wapens zoals het handwapen of het geweer, of maak je eigen boog en bijl vanaf nul. Maak winteruitrusting van dierenhuiden of scharrel in onbewoonde huizen naar kleding.
